For the perfect morning hike, head 20 minutes north of Downtown SLO to Harmony Headlands. The 4-½ mile flat, semi-paved trail winds through classic coastal hills to big payoff views of the Pacific as you hike along the bluffs.
After your hike, mosey a mile further north to the quirky town of Harmony (population 18). Originally settled by Swiss-Italian dairy farmers, this pint sized hamlet has been a draw for artists, artisans, and foodies throughout the decades and is in the midst of a major renaissance. Visit the infamous chapel and pick up gifts at Harmony Pottery or Harmony Glassworks. Then nibble on artisan cheeses while sipping wine at Harmony Cellars and get a taste of what’s to come with a scoop from Harmony Valley Creamery’s Scoop Truck.
On your way back to SLO, stop in Morro Bay for lunch at Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant for fish tacos made from local catch while enjoying views of The Rock (as the locals call it) and frolicking sea critters.
Other great hikes: Bishop Peak, Cerro San Luis, Reservoir Canyon, Johnson Ranch Loop Trail, and Poly Canyon Design Village. Most hikes in SLO are of a ‘moderate’ level.
